शायद रक़ीब डूब मरें बहर-ए-शर्म में
डूबेंगे मौज-ए-अश्क की तुग़्यानियों में हम

it could be in a sea of shame my rival will be drowned
I, sunken in the stormy waves of envy will be found

मोहताज-ए-फ़ैज़-ए-नामिया क्यूँ होते इस क़दर
करते जो सोच कुछ जिगर-अफ़्शानियों में हम

why then beholden to the grace of life-force, would I be
if scattering my heart around, I'd acted thoughtfully

पहुँचाई हम ने मश्क़ यहाँ तक कि हो गए
उस्ताद-ए-अंदलीब नवा-ख़्वानियों में हम

this practice I have taken to such heights that I can claim
to have surpassed the nightingale and put all bards to shame

ग़ैरों के साथ आप भी उठते हैं बज़्म से
लो मेज़बान बन गए मेहमानियों में हम

when with my rivals you too rise to leave the company
Instead of being among the guests, the host I'm held to be

जिन जिन के तू मज़ार से गुज़रा वो जी उठे
बाक़ी रहे हैं एक तिरे फ़ानियों में हम

whoever's grave you ventured past, a new life did obtain
of all who perished in your love, alone do I remain

गुस्ताख़ियों से ग़ैर की उन को मलाल है
मशहूर होते काश अदब-दानियों में हम

my rival's actions coarse and crude so hurtful did she find
if only I was famous for being cultured and refined

देखा जो ज़ुल्फ़-ए-यार को तस्कीन हो गई
यक-चंद मुज़्तरिब थे परेशानियों में हम

when her tresses I beheld, peace only then I found
I was restless until now as troubles did surround

आँखों से यूँ इशारा-ए-दुश्मन न देखते
होते न इस क़दर जो निगहबानियों में हम

signals my rival made to her I never would have seen
if amongst her sentinels, like this, I had not been

जो जान खो के पाएँ तो फ़ौज़-ए-अज़ीम है
वो चीज़ ढूँडते हैं तन-आसानियों में हम

a prize is truly worthy if obtained at cost of life
we seek for things which we can get without a hint of strife

पीर-ए-मुग़ाँ के फ़ैज़-ए-तवज्जोह से 'शेफ़्ता'
अक्सर शराब पीते हैं रूहानियों में हम

sheftaa, the tavern's elder casts his favors, grace on me
I often get the chance to drink in pious company
