फ़रियाद की कोई लय नहीं है

फ़रियाद की कोई लय नहीं है
नाला पाबंद-ए-नय नहीं है

no tune is needed by a sigh
laments do not on flutes rely

क्यूँ बोते हैं बाग़बाँ तोंबे
गर बाग़ गदा-ए-मय नहीं है

why gourds do gardeners now plant
if wine, the garden does not want

हर-चंद हर एक शय में तू है
पर तुझ सी कोई शय नहीं है

although in everything you be
yet there is none who is like thee

हाँ खाइयो मत फ़रेब-ए-हस्ती
हर-चंद कहें कि है नहीं है

by "being" be you not deceived
"is not" however is believed

शादी से गुज़र कि ग़म न होवे
उरदी जो न हो तो दै नहीं है

if joy's eschewed, no grief at all
if spring's not there, nor will be fall

क्यूँ रद्द-ए-क़दह करे है ज़ाहिद
मय है ये मगस की क़य नहीं है

why Priest, does bowl of wine displease
'tis wine, not excrement of bees

हस्ती है न कुछ अदम है 'ग़ालिब'
आख़िर तू क्या है ऐ नहीं है

if being and nothingness are naught
what is? then tell me O "is not"
