گرمیٔ حسرت ناکام سے جل جاتے ہیں

گرمیٔ حسرت ناکام سے جل جاتے ہیں
ہم چراغوں کی طرح شام سے جل جاتے ہیں

I burn up in the flames of unfulfilled desire
like lanterns are, at eventide I am set afire

شمع جس آگ میں جلتی ہے نمائش کے لیے
ہم اسی آگ میں گمنام سے جل جاتے ہیں

the fire,that the flame burns in, for all to see
In that very fire I do burn but namelessly

بچ نکلتے ہیں اگر آتش سیال سے ہم
شعلۂ عارض گلفام سے جل جاتے ہیں

If from the hunter's fire I manage to escape
I perish in the fire that's in the flower's cape

خود نمائی تو نہیں شیوۂ ارباب وفا
جن کو جلنا ہو وہ آرام سے جل جاتے ہیں

exhibition's not the norm for those that faithful be
those who wish to perish then do so quietly

ربط باہم پہ ہمیں کیا نہ کہیں گے دشمن
آشنا جب ترے پیغام سے جل جاتے ہیں

at our mutual fondness why will enemies not fret
when even friends, at your messages, are all het

جب بھی آتا ہے مرا نام ترے نام کے ساتھ
جانے کیوں لوگ مرے نام سے جل جاتے ہیں

whenever my name happens to be linked to thee
I wonder why these people burn with jealousy
